Important Chinese officials are currently visiting the European Union to discuss trade and future economic cooperation. Naturally, the trade conflict with the United States is the key topic in this series of meetings, as the European Union has also been hit hard by the tariffs against China and is eager to see the conflict resolved.

According to the preliminary reports about these meetings, China’s stance currently is against the United States, who’ve recently incurred China’s anger on account of their treatment of tech giant Huawei. The US has accused the Chinese smartphone manufacturer of using their tech to gather information on American government officials, essentially to spy on them. This led to a ban on Huawei to sell their products to the government, putting the trade negotiations between the United States and China in jeopardy. In Brussels Chinese officials did not name Huawei specifically, but it was clear they referring to that case. Huawei is actually fighting for a leading position on the European smartphone market, so naturally the government is trying to protect Chinese interests in the EU.

The bloc is currently revising its own technological security policies and it is possible that the EU might take a similar stance to the United States. The EU will also be asking that China opens up to foreign investment more, something that the US is also trying to achieve currently.
