Amid controversial immigration bans, a ton of surprising tariffs, and a lot of wall-building talk, three years of Donald Trump’s presidency are already behind us. The United States will hold Presidential Elections in 2020; leading up to that, the Democrats have to elect a candidate to run against Trump, who will compete for a second mandate.
Initially, many candidates announced their bid to run for President, but little by little, they have been weeded out. Now the main contenders are engaging in a series of debates which give them a chance to wow the public with their policies.
The three leading candidates right now are Senators Bernie Sanders (who also ran ahead of the 2016 election and lost the bid to Hilary Clinton in the end) and Elizabeth Warren, with Obama’s Vice President Joe Biden taking the top spot in the polls. All three of them are well-liked and refuse to attack each other from the debate podium. However, they do differ in their political affiliations, as Senator Warren is open to the socialist approach of Bernie Sanders, while Biden insists on a centrist position, in line with the way Barack Obama ran things. This distinction makes Biden seem the most obvious choice to lead the country in a way similar to Obama’s, despite his age, which is one of the main arguments against him.
The trade war that Trump began with China is shaping up to be one of the central issues for Democrats. While they are all critical of the way Trump is handling things, especially because it is hurting US farmers and manufacturers, they all said they needed to continue negotiating with China to get a fair trade agreement. Yet, none of them revealed any specific plans, so it seems that even after the 2020 election, the trade war might continue.
