The Chinese government has used a moderate tone to criticise the decision of the United States to hit them with tariffs starting tomorrow, with as little as a 5-days notice. The Asian country stated that they hope the US will not try to jeopardize the progress achieved so far in the talks between the two major economies, who spent all of 2019 negotiating a trade agreement with one another.

Donald Trump previously said that he will increase tariffs on Chinese imports to the States starting tomorrow because China supposedly tried to revise the trade agreement and go back on commitments made early on in the negotiations. China, on the other hand, stated that they are merely trying to negotiate a deal that is mutually beneficial and regardless of what the United States decide to do, will protect Chinese interests.

China still remains optimistic about the possibility of a trade deal and has dispatched a team of negotiators to the US, as scheduled. However, investors are afraid that all of the progress made towards a trade agreement, which has helped calm the financial markets in the past few months, has been erased in a single move by Trump. A trade deal was hinted to come out in a week or two, but now it is uncertain where the current developments will lead.
