Donald Trump’s impeachment trial is currently the most important event in the United States, with almost non-stop media coverage. After last week’s oath-taking, the trial began in full this week.

Yesterday, Democrats had the whole day to present arguments against the President on the charge of abuse of power. In a highly effective strategy, some of the speakers used the exact same words of Republicans regarding Trump, as well as arguments they made against Clinton during his impeachment trial back in 1999.

One of the most memorable moments was when Democrats pulled up a clip of Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham saying that you can impeach a President over something that is not technically a crime, which was his argument against Clinton. Republicans have repeatedly tried to defend Trump in this trial by saying that what he may have done was not a crime, but now Sen. Graham’s words from 1999 have come back to haunt Republicans.

Although they claim that even the current evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation against Trump is sound enough, Democrats are currently trying to convert at least four Republican senators, which would give them the votes to summon two key witnesses that have so far refused to show up for questioning, namely John Bolton, who was the President’s security advisor at the time, and Mick Mulvaney, the chief of staff. Many suspect that these two will say something that would inadvertently turn the case against Trump, which is why Republicans have done everything in their power to prevent them from showing up and participating in the trial.

A looming concern is that no matter how much evidence is presented, and how convincing it is, Republican senators will still choose to ignore the facts and defend Trump not because it is the right thing to do from a moral standpoint, but because they want to protect their partisan interests.

A new poll among Trump votes shows that roughly one third of the President’s supporters believe he did something illegal. However, even with this knowledge, they still want him to remain President.
