Tariffs Hit the EU

Though most of the talk about a trade war has been focused on the United States and China, it is worth noting that other countries might soon be affected. The first round of tariffs announced by the US government pertained to steel and aluminum imports to the States and applied to almost the whole world.

Over the past two months there was a moratorium on the tariffs levies on the European Union, meaning they were not enforced yet and the union had time to plan a response. However, statements came from the White House that by tomorrow an official announcement will be made regarding tariffs imposed on the European Union.

Though White House officials have stated they do not want a trade war with the EU, they also said that if the bloc retaliates against their tariffs, it would lead to a trade war. France has already stated that if there are tariffs, there will be retaliation, and there is already a plan proposed by the European Commission to add duty fees worth almost 3.5 billion dollars on US exports.

With China already disputing claims by the United States before the WTO, now the European Union might turn against the US as well, and we could have a full-scale global trade war.
