Just three weeks after the meeting between the leaders of North and South Korea which inspired millions of people to dream of a resolution of that conflict, North Korea showed signs of changing its mind again.
There was a meeting between representatives of North and South Korea scheduled for today, but it was cancelled by North Korea over their state channels. The country cited a currently ongoing military exercise by the United States in South Korea as the reason for cancelling the meeting. According to them, the exercise is a simulation for possible joint war actions against the North.
Furthermore, the Foreign minister of North Korea was reported by the state channel KCNA to say that North Korea will also walk away from the planned meeting with Trump on June 12 if its nuclear program continues to be in danger. The North Koreans are open to denuclearization only if it pertains to both sides, i.e. they expect the United States to give up their weapons as well.
The South Korean government, who is trying to resolve their own differences with North Korea and at the same time lay the groundwork for the meeting with the United States, is currently attempting to schedule another meeting and continue the peace talks.
