The Mueller Report is Out

President Trump is taking it lightly, but Congress is alarmed by the report.

The United States Congress was rattled today as Special Counsel Robert Mueller finally published his finished, almost 500-page report on whether there were any illegal actions performed during the election of President Trump in 2016, with a special focus on Russia’s role in the elections and the implications of whether Donald Trump colluded with Russian informants. The investigation took almost two years and produced numerous successful indictments of people from within Donald Trump’s inner circle, though Mueller stopped short of outright accusing the President.

In the final form of the report Mueller did not explicitly indicate that Trump was guilty of collusion, but it does contain quite a bit to indicate the President was desperate to put an end to the investigation, which his administration has for a long time labeled a “witch hunt.” However, Mueller stated that it is up to Congress to decide what action is appropriate after they have read the report.

The Democrats subsequently shared they had concerns over some of the measures Trump took to try to stop the investigation, which they see as grounds to accuse him of obstruction of justice. They have previously stated that they are ready to launch other inquiries into the activities of the President, though right now it seems unlikely they will try to impeach him.

While President Trump appeared to be very relaxed after the publication, things are far from over. Robert Mueller will be testifying on the matter on May 23 and many members of Congress feel that the unredacted version of the report could be used for a more in-depth FBI investigation. Even without an impeachment, this could be used against Trump in his 2020 re-election campaign.
