The US President continues with his formal visits. After attending a turbulent NATO summit in Brussels last week and visiting the United Kingdom over the weekend, Donald Trump is sitting down with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki today.
Over the years Trump has shown a fondness for the Russian President, despite the image that Putin has amid other world leaders. Today Trump reiterated that he is seeking a positive relationship with Russia, criticizing the past US governments for their hostility.
Some major topics are on the agenda for the meeting, including nuclear weapons, China, and international trade. Media have pointed out that it is odd that topics such as the war in Syria and the conflict in Ukraine, which previous administrations have addressed, are not part of Trump’s talking points.
There is still an ongoing investigation regarding Russia’s possible meddling in the 2016 Presidential elections in the United States, which Trump and his supported have repeatedly tried to discredit. Even last week there were new indictments against Russians who stole documents from the Democratic Party.
