Throughout the month of February there were preliminary voting days from various states across the US to determine how each of the candidates for a Democratic presidential nomination is doing. What started as the year with the most diverse candidates running for President has now turned into a two-men show.
Last week, Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg both announced they will no longer run for President. After dropping out of the race, people tend to formally endorse one of the remaining candidates, encouraging their voters to switch over to someone who has a better chance to win. Both Klobuchar and Buttigieg endorsed Former Vice President Joe Biden, who represents the more moderate branch of Democrats and was an early favorite even before the race began.
On Wednesday, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg stepped down from the race. The real shocker came on Thursday, when Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced she is also putting an end to her presidential campaign. Warren has been one of the most talked-about candidates, with a stellar reputation as a Senator and a progressive campaign.
However, the Massachusetts senator failed to gather enough votes, doing progressively worse in each of the preliminaries. Many believe that the overlap between her platform and Bernie Sanders’ is the reason for that failure. More progressive Democrat voters have been split between voting for Sanders and Warren until now.
As a result, now there are only two candidates left: Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. One of them will face Trump in November to vie for the title of President of the United States.
But all is not over for Sen. Warren. She has not endorsed either of the two candidates yet, instead stating she needs to think about it longer. Nevertheless, there is large speculation that both Biden and Sanders will ask Warren to co-run with them as Vice President. Whom she chooses to endorse, and possibly run with, will have huge implications on the upcoming elections.
