Time is running out once again for the United Kingdom regarding Brexit, but it seems Theresa May’s government still does not have a clear plan for handling Britain’s exit from the European Union.
Over the past weeks Theresa May has been meeting up with the opposition Labour Party in order to negotiate a compromise agreement that would be able to gather enough support in Parliament, if backed by both Tories and Labour MPs. However, a long-standing concern is that Jeremy Corbyn wants a customs union with the EU, something that May herself has spoken against a number of times.
Theresa May’s Conservative Party seems to be losing its patience with the Prime Minister. Today a number of high-ranking Tories sent May an official request to back out of the talks with Corbyn, stating that any compromise the two might reach will go against the Party’s values and objectives. Moreover, since May has shown her readiness to resign as soon as she sees a deal safely pass through Parliament, these Conservatives warned that whoever inherits her post will likely not honour the promises she makes to the opposition anyway.
Currently there is speculation that with the extreme lack of progress, we are likely to see Theresa May resign by the end of next month. It is unclear what this might mean for Brexit.
